History

Our Heritage: 50 Years of Integrity, Quality, and Leadership

For half a century, Alpha Metal Finishing has served as a trusted cornerstone for precision anodizing and surface finishing. Founded in 1976 by Bob Wood, a licensed professional engineer, Alpha began with a simple but powerful blueprint: to combine superior quality and rapid turnaround with an uncompromised ethical compass. What started as a small, humble operation has grown into an industry-leading, family-owned manufacturing partner in Dexter, Michigan, serving high-stakes fields like aerospace, medical devices, electronics, automotive, and national defense.

While our facilities and capabilities have drastically expanded over the decades, the true engine behind Alpha’s longevity isn’t just our advanced machinery—it is our deep-seated commitment to our people, our old-school work ethic, and our foundational values.

An Uncompromising Ethical Core & Work Ethic

At Alpha, we believe that a job worth doing is worth doing right the first time. In an industry where tight margins and rapid production speeds often tempt providers to cut corners, we rely on a relentless, honest Midwestern work ethic. Every tier of our workforce—from senior production specialists to our chemical and environmental engineers—is aligned around the principle of total operational transparency.

For 50 years, we have maintained absolute integrity in our environmental compliance, pricing structures, and lead-time reporting. We operate under a shared belief that business integrity is paramount, choosing long-term client trust over short-term financial gains. This philosophy means we view every metal part that enters our facility not just as an order, but as a representation of our client’s livelihood and our own reputation.

This resilience was tested and proven during the manufacturing downturns of the early 2000s. Facing severe macroeconomic pressures and the loss of major clients, Alpha refused to lower quality or compromise on standards to save on costs. Instead, we dug into our core values, tightened operational efficiencies, and emerged stronger—formally certifying our processes under rigid ISO guidelines and expanding our capabilities to include Type II and Type III hardcoat anodizing, chromate conversion, and stainless steel passivation.

Leadership and Culture: Our "Secret Sauce"

Our enduring success in a competitive market is rooted in a unique corporate philosophy: an intense focus on leadership development and a deeply ingrained, people-first culture.

Under the guidance of Greg Wood, who joined the family business in 2010 and now serves as President and owner, Alpha has intentionally nurtured a workplace environment centered on collaboration and mutual accountability. With a professional background in human resources, Greg recognized early on that technical machinery is only as reliable as the hands operating it.

“Truthfully, the technical problems are easier to manage than the people problems at times,” Greg notes. “But that is all part of what makes this an adventure.”

This commitment to organic growth, mentorship, and career advancement is perfectly personified by Vice President Jamie Barrus. Jamie originally walked through Alpha’s doors in 1998 as a production racker. Showcasing an elite work ethic and a natural affinity for technical precision, she climbed her way through production and quality assurance roles to executive leadership. Her servant-leadership methodology and sharp customer focus reflect a team built not merely to process industrial orders, but to create remarkable customer experiences.

By investing heavily in human capital, we have fostered an environment marked by enduring employee tenures, multi-generational staffing, and a steadfast dedication to continual learning. From cross-training production specialists across multiple finishing lines to engaging administrative teams in trust-building initiatives, culture is treated as our primary strategic differentiator.

Customer-First Focus and Quality Excellence

Across five decades, our combination of technical expertise and moral clarity has solidified Alpha’s sterling reputation for delivery excellence. Our ISO 9001:2015 certification serves as a formal testament to our disciplined process control, rigid tracking systems, and commitment to highly repeatable, flawless finishes.

Because we understand that sub-par finishing can compromise millions of dollars in advanced manufacturing components, we function as a trusted extension of our clients’ production lines. Our partners consistently rely on our responsive, human-to-human communication, our flexible turnaround capabilities, and our ability to meet the most stringent military and medical specifications.

As Alpha Metal Finishing celebrates this historic 50-year milestone, we look backward with genuine gratitude for our rich heritage and forward with robust optimism. We continue to invest in modern manufacturing innovations—ranging from upgraded automated process controls to advanced eco-friendly water purification systems. Yet, through every technological shift and market fluctuation, we remain anchored to the fundamental rule established half a century ago: to finish it right from the beginning.
